Robert Coles would like to find an illustration of an ancient measuring rod used in medieval architecture.

Dear Tools and Trades History Society

I’ve just found a reference to your society in an old Guardian newspaper cutting tucked away inside my copy of ‘Furniture Making’ by Ernest Joyce. It’s an obituary on the tool historian (amongst his many other abilities) Bill Goodman, dated 3rd August 1993.

I’m pleased to see that your society still thrives.

I’ve been researching the use of proportion and dimensions in medieval architecture and have been trying to find an example of an ancient measuring rod or an illustration of one in use. I wonder if anyone in your society would be able to help?

Robert Coles

I was told by a naval archaeologist that the Museum of London have several early measuring rods in their reserve collection.
