As I'm sure many members will know this item is a sash dowelling box. Window sash bars were dowelled together until,it's thought, around 1850. This is clearly shown in Peter Nicholson's 1853 edition of Practical Carpentry, Joinery, and Cabinet-Making.
To help improve accuracy and speed up hand production the box must have been indispensible. Once adjusted to hold the required glazing bar, consistent repetitious borehole could be achieved with the use of special bits in a brace.
