Catalogues
Marples 1928
The 237 page 1928 Marples Catalogue of "Shamrock" brand tools. It lists a huge range of Sheffield's finest tools, from Adzes to Zinc Salt Saws - many for the carpenter and joiner, but also tools for the cooper, engineer, mason, basketmaker, plumber, gardener, decorator, cook, saddler, shepherd, shoemaker, wheelwright, and many more besides - even the Roller Coverer!
Tools for all Trades Gardiner 1940
Another delightful example of a small local catalogue. This one is from Gardiner and Sons Ltd of Nelson Street Bristol and dates from January 1940.
Ridgley Trimmer Catalogue
A decorator's catalogue. The date is probably 1930’s . The firm seems to have originated as the London branch of an Ohio manufacturer but is in Clerkenwell by 1915. It apparently still exists in Sussex, having moved there in 1921
Wheelwright's Price List 1919
A fascinating little booklet giving standard prices for wheelwrights' work, which turned up in Leicestershire and was given to Andy Brown as someone interested in such things. An insight into the days when work was standardised, with quality and prices controlled by the makers.
George Barnsley and Sons - Shoe tools
Based in Cornish Works Sheffield, Barnsley and Sons produced shoemakers' tools. This catalogue from 1927 uses the innovative development of code numbers for each product !
"Toga" Tested Tools
Another lovely little catalogue from a relatively small retailer, this time from October 1938. I think probably based In Gloucester.
TC Jones and Co 1925
A very long (499 pages) catalogue from London merchants TC Jones and Co, dated 1925. Lots of engineering tools, factory kit, machinery and some special lines such as the Waiviblade shears.
Nash 1899 Catalogue
A result of some careful restoration by Andy Tuckwell, this is a fascinating catalogue which nicely complements the Fussells reprint from 2001.
It does include tools from less common trades - Ship's Chandler, Lead working, mining, railways. The Drowning Knife was a new one to us!
There is one lovely colour lithograph of garden tools. Oh and yes, there are some billhooks!
Note there is some damage to plates 50 and 51 and pages 51 and 52, where there is some of the page missing. Sellotape has been used to repair the pages. We will try to update the scan with better images in due course, if they can be produced.
